Our Teachers

Our teachers are everywhere.

Sometimes they are the people who inspire us to become more giving, or patient, or kind, or other things good.

But our more important teachers are the ones who dredge up unpleasant feelings, such as fear or anger or even disgust. Crossing paths with these people can be a huge impetus for growth and inner exploration.

So, let’s bring it on down into the real world.

I was at a party recently with one of those people that no matter where the conversation went, whether it be personal stories, current events, or knowledge about a healthy diet, she had to jump in and know the most or be the funniest. She had to have “one better” as we sometimes say.

We got in the car to leave and I said to my husband something like, “Can you believe her? She just has to be the center of attention.” He said, “That’s true, but why does it bother you so much?”

Hmmmmm. He was right. I was triggered by this behavior. I was even angry. Why?

Whenever someone triggers you, look inside. I mean really look inside. Get still and introspect about why the person’s behavior bothers you so much—because it’s usually more about you.

In the case of the know-it-all lady, I was irritated because she stepped all over places that my ego said that I was the expert in the room. “Doesn’t she realize that I have more education than she does in these areas,” my ego stated and then sighed, aghast. Perhaps it was my ego, after all, that needed to be the center of attention. Aha. Maybe I wanted to be the center of attention.

I was able to see what I call my “shadow side,” and pull my own unpleasantness into the light and let it go, or at least call a spade a spade and give the poor woman a break.

Who has irritated you the most lately? Ask yourself why.
